When we're expecting a new little one in our lives, everyone gets so excited about gender! We shop for blues and pinks, and decorate our nurseries.
But there are a few reasons why it can be exciting to wait till your little one arrives.
The most important thing is that you and your baby are strong and healthy! By removing gender from the equation, you can focus on feeling well, staying fit, and bringing baby into the world with all ten fingers and toes.
Even with all of the current medical technology, ultrasound tests can’t always accurately predict a baby’s gender! Sometimes the position of the baby makes it impossible to determine, and sometimes doctors just get it wrong. By waiting to find out your baby’s gender, you won’t have to worry about the extra shock of figuring out what to do with your pretty pink baby room when your precious little boy is born.
Having a baby is already a lot to handle. Having the extra pressure and cost associated with throwing a gender-reveal party, hiring a professional photographer and sending out multiple announcements is often more stressful than it is enjoyable. Simply focus on sending out a single birth announcement and take the extra time to enjoy some pre-baby alone time with your partner or sink into a bubble bath.
Since you won’t know the gender of your baby, you won’t have to worry about well-meaning friends, family, and colleagues giving you biased advice on “how to raise a boy,” or “ what to dress your girl” in. You can simply focus on what type of person you’d like your baby to be.
There are no guarantees that the name you’ve chosen for your baby is actually a name that suits your baby’s look and personality. By waiting to find out the gender, you can delay the naming process and choose once you’ve gotten to know your little person first.
Similarly to #6 & #7, it’s often better to wait to meet your baby before developing gender expectations. Often, we think “baby boy,” and automatically fantasize about how good they’ll be on the baseball diamond, or we hear, “baby girl,” and our minds go straight to piano lessons and pink tutus. Every child has a unique personality, so if you wait to meet them before you decide who they’ll be, you’re more likely to connect with and support who they really are.
You can get creative and look for pieces that would be adorable on a boy or a girl, even if the product isn’t labeled, “gender-neutral.” You’ll be surprised to find girl-appropriate gear in the boy’s section and vice-versa. We love this adorable orange ‘ Ice Cream Onesie’ and these cozy ‘ Mini Parker Sweatpants’ by Appaman.
Remember all those amazing gender-neutral toys and clothing that you received because you followed tip #4? You can use them again for your next baby, no matter what the gender is!
We all know how hard and painful delivery is, but by having an extra surprise to focus on, you’ll be even more motivated to make it through that last push.
The moment the doctor says, “it’s a boy,” or “it’s a girl,” you’ll be treated to the surprise of discovering the gender compounded by nine months of patiently waiting to meet the newest member of your family.
